we are going to setup an equation where x is the amount of men at the party.
Since there are 3 less women then men we will take the amount of men (x) and add that to the amount of women (x-3) andthat will equal 55.
55=x+(x-3)
now we solve for x to get
55=2x-3
58=2x
and finnally
x=29
and remember since x is the amount of men we have 29 men
and now to get the amount of women we simply subtract 29 from 55 toget
55-29=26
and 26 is the number of women
so there are 26 women and 29 men

Men=x+3
Women=x
TOTAL=55
55 = x + x + 3
52 = 2x
x=26
Men=x+3
26 + 3
29 Men
