Given y = y ( x ) what is
d d x ( e x ( x 2 + y 2 ) )
I think its the d d x confusing me, I don't what effect it has compablack to d y d x . Any help will be greatly appreciated.

d / d x means "derivative with respect to x", with implicit differentiation, you assume y is a function of x, i.e. y = y ( x ), so that, y is meant to mean d y / d x.

It is
e x ( x 2 + y 2 ) + e x ( 2 x + 2 y y ) ,
where I use y for d y / d x.
