Use the Euclidean distance:
d = Δ x 2 + Δ y 2 = ( 3 - 0 ) 2 + ( 0 - 4 ) 2 = 3 2 + 4 2 = 9 + 16 = 25 = 5
Note: The order of the coordinates inside the powers does not matter.
Understanding it: Geometrically speaking, draw a line between these two points in the Cartesian system. Afterwards, draw a vertical line and a horizontal line in each of the points. You can notice that they form 2 triangles which have a 90 o angle each. Pick one of them and apply the Pythagorean theorem.
