Given:

\frac{a + 1}{b - 1} = \frac{5}{1}

and

\frac{a - 1}{b + 1} = \frac{1}{1}

Calculation:
Putting the values of a and b such that the proportion is correct,

\frac{a + 1}{b - 1} = \frac{5}{1}

a + 1 = 5

a = 5 - 1

a = 4

and

b - 1 = 1

b = 1 + 1

b = 2

Therefore,

\frac{b}{a} = \frac{2}{4}

\frac{b}{a} = \frac{1}{2}

Putting the values of a and b such that the proportion is correct,

\frac{a - 1}{b + 1} = \frac{1}{1}

a - 1 = 1

a = 1 + 1

a = 2

and

b + 1 = 1
