This problem can be simplyfied and solved by combininglike terms. So rewite the problem like this.
4y -13y + 3y = 16-12-40
Combine like terms
-6y=-36
Divide both sides by -6 to isolate the y
6 y 6 = 36 6  so then  y = 6

- the first step in solving for a variable is to get anything withthat variable on one side and whole numbers on the other.
- for this equation, you see things with variables in blue andwhole #s in red:
40 + 4y- 16 = 13y- 12 - 3y
40 - 16 + 4y = 13y - 3y - 12 ( i just rearranged it a littlehere )
24 + 4y = 10y - 12 ( 40 - 16 = 24. since 13y and 3y have samevariable you can subtract 13y - 3y = 10y )
24 + 4y + 12 = 10y - 12 + 12 ( you get 12 on the whole # sideby using opposite operation - 12 + 12 = 0 )
24 + 12 + 4y = 10y
36 + 4y = 10y
36 + 4y - 4y = 10y - 4y ( reminder: whatever you do to one side,you have to do to other )
36 = 6y
36/6 = 6y/6
6 = y
