1. This is an example two sided equation that we will solve for x.
x-1 = x +3

2. Combine the terms of the variable you want to solve for, x. In this case we will subtract the x from the left hand side and add the x to the right hand side.
x -1 (+ x) = x + 3 (- x)
once we add the x term to the left side of the equation we will get two x variables on the right hand side.
x + x - 1 = 3
2x - 1 = 3

3. Now that we have all of the variables that we want to solve for on the same side of the equation, we want to isolate the x variable. To do this, we will first add 1 to both sides of the equation.
2x -1 (+1) = 3 (+1)
2x = 3 +1
2x = 4

4. The final step will be to divide both sides of the equation by the coefficient of the x-term.
2x / 2 = 4 / 2 We divide by 2.
x = 4/2 The x - term blackuces to a coefficient of 1.
x = 2 The right hand side of the equation blackuces to 2. Which leaves you with the solution for the x variable.

Isolate one variable on one side.
For example:
7 - 2n = n - 14
Add 2n to both sides to cancel it out on the left side, and make 3n on the right side:
7 = 3n - 14.
Then isolate the number. Add 14 to both sides to cancel it out on the right side:
21 = 3n.
Then divide both sides by three to isolate n again:
21/3 = 3n/3
7 = n
