Intensity is directly proportional to the square of the amplitude, i.e.
I A 2
or
\frac{I_{1}}{I_{2}}=\frac{A_{1}^{2}}{A_{2}^{2}}\frac{I_{1}}{I_{2}}=\frac{A_{1}^{2}}{A_{2}^{2}}Show External URL Show Embeded Code Hide MathML CodeI1I2=A21A22 I 1 I 2 = A 1 2 A 2 2
where:
I is the intensity of the wave
A is the amplitude of the wave
So, we get:
3 W / m 2 I 2 = ( 0.2 m m ) 2 ( 0.4 m m ) 2
= 0.04 m m 2 0.16 m m 2
= 1 4
I 2 = 4 1 3 W / m 2
= 12 W / m 2
