(a+2)(a25a+9)
=a(a25a+9)+2(a25a+9)
=(a35a2+9a)+(2a210a+18)
=a35a2+2a2+9a10a+18
=a3+(5+2)a2+(910)a+18
=a33a2a+18
Alternatively, look at each power of a in descending order and collect the terms that multiply to contribute to the coefficient of that power of a:
a3:aa2=a3
a2:(a5a)+(2a2)=5a2+2a2=3a2
a: (a*9)+(2*-5a)=9a-10a=-a
1:2*9=18
