Let the longest piece be L=3mx
Let the middle piece be M=x
Let the shortest piece be S=x-5
Total length of the pieces S+M+L=40
(x-5)+(x)+(3x)=40
x-5+x+3x=40
5x-5=40
Add 5 to both sides and you get
5x=45
x = 45 5 = 9
Hence, M=x=9cm
Hence, L=3x=3(9)=27cm
Hence, S=x-5=9-5=4cm
Therefore, 4cm+9cm+27cm=40cm
