in one hour the pipe can fill the pool 1/12th the way
in one hour the hose can fill the pool 1/30th the way
1/12 + 1/30 = 7/60
one hour both can fill 7/60 of pool
inverse 7/60 and you'll get 60/7
it will take 60/7 or 8.57 hours for both the pipe and hose to fill the pool working together

pool can be filled in 12 hours if water enters through a pipe alone
so it fills 1/12 of the pool in one hour
30 hours if water enters through a hose
so it fills 1/30 of the pool in one hour
so combining both, the will fill 1/30 +1/12 = 7/60 of the pool perhour
so if x is the hours neccesary to fill the pool the equation is:
1=7/60 x x = 8.57 hours
