John takes six hours to paint a house, while Sally takes four.
Sally can paint three houses in 12 hours, while John can paint two houses in that time (I chose 12 because it is the least common multiple of 4 and 6).
In 12 hours, Sally and John together can paint 5 houses. In otherwords, 12 hours = 5 houses.
We just want to know how long it takes to paint 1 house, so divideeach side by 5: 12/5 hours = 1 house.
12/5 hours is the same as 2.4 hours, or 2 hours and 24 minutes.

sally can paint house in 4 hours
sally can paint in 1 hour = 1 4 of house
john can paint house in 6 hours
john can paint in 1 hour = 1 6 of house
both can paint in 1 hour = 1 4 + 1 6
= 3 + 2 12
= 5 12
time taken to complete paint = 1 5 12
= 12 5 hours
= 12 5 × 60 minutes
=144 minutes
= 2 hours 24 minutes
