let x be the number of dimes
x + 8 will be the number of quarters
0.1x + 0.25(x + 8) = 6.2
0.35x + 2 = 6.2
0.35 x = 4.2
x = 12 dimes
x+8 = 20 quarters

let d equal the number of dimes
8+d will be the number of quarters
mulitply by value of coin
.10d+.25(8+d)=6.20 distributive property
.10d+2+.25d=6.20 add like terms
.35d+2=6.20 inverse operations(subtract2)
.35d=4.20 divide
d=12
12 dimes and 20 quarters
