The Chi square test is statistical test used to determine whether the observed frequencies are significantly different from the expected frequencies. It is also most commonly used statistical test to test the relationship between categorical variables.
Chi-square test unable us to compare the observed and expected frequencies objectively since it is not possible to just look at them and state that they are significantly different or not.
Examples:
A. Suppose we have data related to the gender and the education qualification in a tabular format like below:
High School  Barhelors  Masters  Ph.D.  Total  Female 60544641201 Male 40445357194 Total 100989998395
In the above defined problem we can use the Chi-square test to check whether the gender and the level of education are independent of each other or not.
B. Suppose we want to test whether attending the class influences the performance of students in the examination. However, we cannot take their percentage or grades and compare directly hence, we group them into Attended or skipped class and whether they passed or failed in the examination. We obtain the count of the students in particular category as below suppose.
Pass  Fail  Total  Attended 25631 Skipped 81523 Total 332154
Now, we can apply the chi-square test to test whether attending the class influences the performance of students in the examination or not.
