The chi-square test of independence is used when there are two categorical variables. It is mainly applied to check whether there exists significant relationship between two categorical variables or not.
The chi-square test of independence is used when following conditions are fulfilled:
1. When both the dependent and independent variables are categorical, and observations are independent of each other.
2. The method being used is simple random sampling.
3. The frequency of each cell is at least 5.
It must be noted that the chi-square test of independence can be applied when there are two categorical variables. Not when there is one categorical and other continuous variable.
