Comparison of Simple random sampling and systematic sampling.
Similarities:
1. Simple random sample is a probability sampling. Systematic sampling is also a type of probability sampling.
2. In both methods the sample mean is an unbiased estimator of population mean
3. Both methods gives a representative sample of the population.
Differences:
1. In simple random sampling, each unit of the population has an equal chance of selection. The sample units are selected by using random numbers tables. While in systematic sampling the first observation is selected at random and the other units are selected with some sampling interval. Therefore, systematic sampling is a mixed sampling technique.
2. Whenever the population size is very large, systematic sampling is operationally more convenient than simple random sampling.
3. If the sampling interval exhibit any periodic pattern, then systematic sampling produce highly biased results. In such cases simple random sampling is more accurate.
4. If the ordered list of population is at random then systematic sample is more efficient than simple random sample.
