Step 1
Consider a following example :
Suppose the probability it will rain on an particular day is 0.6 . A man goes to the office a probability the man will take a umberalla when it is raining is 0.9 and the probability the man will take a umberalla when it is not raining is 0.2. Calculate the probability that the man carries an umberalla.
Step 2
The events can be defined as:
A : it is raining on that particular day
B: it is not raining on that particular day
E: a man takes the umberalla on that particular day
Following probabilities are given:
P(A)=0.6
P(B)=1P(A)
=10.6
=0.4
P(EA)=0.9
P(EB)=0.1
Using law of total probability, the probability that a man takes the umberalla on an particular day can be calculated as:
P(E)=P(A)P(EA)+P(B)P(EB)
=0.6×0.9+0.4×0.1
=0.58
