In transverse wave, particles that carry the wave move in direction perpendicular (i.e. making a 90 angle) to direction of the movement of the wave (if the wave was moving horizontally to the right, the particles would be moving vertically, going both above and below that horizontal movement axis (like a sine wave);
In longitudinal wave, particles that carry the wave move in direction parallel to direction of the movement of the wave (if the wave was moving horizontally to the right, the particles would also move horizontally to the right);
Sound is a longitudinal wave, while light is a transversal wave.
