The energy released during an earthquake is transmitted through the interior of the Earth to the surface by seismic waves.
Seismic waves are measured using a device called a seismograph in seismic stations. There are two types of seismic waves: body and surface waves. Body seismic waves travel through the Earth's interior and surface seismic waves travel through the layer just below the Earth's surface.
