Because its molecules are not constantly in touch with one another like those of a solid, air is a poor conductor. Because the vibrations of the molecules immediately impact their neighbors, heat transferred by conduction moves more quickly through solids. Only when air molecules collide do they transfer energy, and the collision duration is too brief for any meaningful energy transfer to take place. Convection is primarily responsible for the transport of heat in the air, however it is generally less effective than conduction.
