Aromaticity and the term "resonance energy" are basically related. The very first attempt to identify the aromaticity is done through resonance energy. In simple words resonance energy is the energy that helps in determining the delocalized electrons present in any molecules where a single Lewis structure cannot specifically expresses the bonding.Resonance energy can be measured as the difference in energies of two compounds that is having localized Lewis structure and another delocalized real compound. If the difference is larger between two compounds then greater will be the aromaticity.Mathematical representation of resonance energy is as follows: RE=Edelocalized-ElocalizedThe compound which is having delocalized electrons is more stable in nature.Example: Benzene, Carbonate ion, etc.
