When sound energy leaves its source, it disrupts the environment in the form of a wave. A medium is necessary for the sound wave to travel. Longitudinal waves make up the sound waves. Due to the longitudinal motion of the air particles, there are areas in the air where the air particles are crushed together and other areas where the air particles are separated out. Compression refers to the process of compressing a particle, and rarefaction refers to the process of spreading a particle. The sound travels as a longitudinal wave when these regions shift. So, the airborne sound waves are longitudinal waves.
