The average rate of change of function f on interval [a,b] is:
fx=f(b)f(a)ba
In this case, we have a=1, and b=5,
and f(x)=4x2
So we get
f(5)=4(5)2=100 and f(1)=4, thus
fx=f(5)f(1)51=10044=964=24
Notice that the average rate of change is the same as the slope of the line connecting the points: (1, f(1)) and (5, f(5)).
