In general the rate of change of y=x2+5x is
dydx=2x+5
At x=5
dydx=2(5)+5=15
At x=2
dydx=2(2)+5=9
Between x=2 and x=5
dydx changes by 15-9=6
The distance between (x=2) and (x=5) is 5-2=3
The average rate of change (per unit change in x) is
63=2

The average rate of change of a function f on an interval [a,b] is:
fx=f(b)f(a)ba
The average rate of change of a function f(x)=x2+fx on an interval [2,5] is:
fx=f(5)f(2)(5)(2)
=50143=363=12
