The 3-D version of the Pythagorean Theorem tells us that that distance between two points ( x 1 , y 1 , z 1 ) and ( x 2 , y 2 , z 2 ) is
XXXXX ( Δ x ) 2 + ( Δ y ) 2 + ( Δ z ) 2
XXX = ( x 2 - x 1 ) 2 + ( y 2 - y 1 ) 2 + ( z 2 - z 1 ) 2
In this case with points (3,-1,1) and (4,1,-3)
the distance is
XXX ( 4 - 3 ) 2 + ( 1 - ( - 1 ) ) 2 + ( ( - 3 ) - 1 ) 2
XXX = 1 2 + 2 2 + ( - 4 ) 2
XXX = 21
