Any number that can be expressed as a fraction using integers is referred to as rational.
Between -2 and -1, there are an infinite number of rational numbers. The numbers -2 and -1 can be used to find one by slightly changing their appearance:
- 2 1 ( 10 10 ) = - 20 10
- 1 1 ( 10 10 ) = - 10 10
Notice that I haven't changed the values at all - I've simply multiplied them by a creative form of the number 1.
With the two numbers written in fractional form this way, it's easier to see a few of the rational numbers that sit between -2 and -1:
- 11 10 , - 12 10 , ... - 19 10 and we can express these as decimals:
- 1.1 , - 1.2 , ... - 1.9
In fact, I can write any string of decimals and know that I can convert it to fractional form as long as the string of decimals ends at some point. This number is rational as a result:
-1.232989487738472634985986
