Calculation:
As we know that from the definition a quotient of two quantities is called a ratio. For example, quotient of two quantity a and b will be given as $\frac{a}{b}$. This is called the ratio of a and b. Another nototion to express a ratio is $a:b$.
We also know that from the definition, a mathematical equation signifting equality of two ratios is called a proportion. Proportion is used when three quantities are known and fourth quantity is unknown. We can use equality of two ratios for finding the fourth unknown quantity.
For example: $\frac{a}{b}=\frac{c}{d}$ is a proportion.
After doing cross product, we get $ad=bc$. This is a method for solving a proportion.
Here, a and d are called extremes and b and c are called means.
We also know that when we solve a proportion then, given two ratios should have quantities with similar units in same relative position.
