The chart to the right shows a country's annual egg production. Model the data in the chart with a linear function, using the points (0,52.7) and (4,61.4). Let x=0 represent 1994, x=1 represent 1995, and so on, and let y represent the egg production (in billions). Predict egg production in 2000. How does the result compare to the actual data given in hte table, 70.7?

Step 1
Let x represent the year and y represent the egg production .
Here x=0 represent 1994, x=1 represent 1995 and so on.
Step 2
We need to find linear model for the data using point (0,52.7) and (4,61.4)
We know that the slope of line using two points is given by
slope=y2y1x2x1=61.452.740=8.74=2.175
Now equation of the linear model is given by
y52.7=slope(x0)
y=2.175x+52.7
Egg production in year 2000 (x=6)
y=2.175(6)+52.7=65.75 billion
Compare the predicted egg production ( 65.75 billion ) in year 2000 to the actual data (70.7 billion)
Take the difference from the actual data
=70.765.75=4.95 billion
The result is 4.95 billion eggs less than the actual figure .

Given that points (x1,y1)=(0,52.7)
(x2,y2)=(4,61.5)
of linear function
so linear eq-n given by
yy1=y2y1x2x1(xx1)
y52.7=61.552.740(x0)
y=2.2x+52.7
This is linear model for the data
at 2001,x=6
y=2.2×6+52.7
y=65.9
Actual value at 2001 is 70.7
so model underestimates at 2001

Let, x represent the year after 1994 and y represent the egg production. From the given data we have at x=0,y=52.7 At x=4,y=61.5 Let, y=mx+c be the slope intercept formula of the model. Then 52.7=0+c or,c=52.7 Again, 61.5=4m+52.7 Or, 4m=8.8 Or, m=2.2 So required linear model for the data is y=2.2x+52.7 And at 2000, x=20001994=6 So y=65.9 that is predicted egg production in 2000 is 65.9 billion.
