Step 1
We can work through this question, by using only fractions.
Mrs Chen used 12 of the eggs.
This means she has 12 of the eggs left.
She uses another 14 of the 12 that are left
14×12=18
Together she has used:
12+18
=48+18=58
If 58 have been used, it means that 8858=38 is left
38 of the total number of eggs is 9 eggs
18 of the total is 9÷3=3 eggs
88 is the total number of eggs 3×8=24 eggs
Check:
12×24=12 eggs used. 12 eggs are left
14×12=3 more eggs are used.
123=9 eggs are left from the 24.

Step 1
First use 12
Second use 14remainder14×12=18
Total use is:
12+18[12×44]+18=58
Therefore not used is: 158=38total count
But not used is 9 eggs
38total count=9egg
Step 2
But we need 1 of total count. Not 38 of it. Thus we need to change the 38 into 1
Multiply both sides by 83
Note that this is where the shortcut method of cross multiply comes from.
83×[38×total count]=83×[9eggs]
33×88×total count=8×93 eggs
1×1×total count=723eggs
Note that 1×total count is the same as total count
total count=24eggs
