Solution: we have ( s + 9 ) 2 9 = 0
we know that ( a + b ) 2 = a 2 + b 2 + 2 a b
s 2 + 9 2 × s × 9 9 = 0 s 2 + 81 + 18 s 9 = s 2 + 18 s + 72 = 0 s 2 + 12 s + 6 s + 72 = 0 s ( s + 12 ) + 6 ( s + 12 ) = 0 ( s + 6 ) ( s + 12 ) = 0 s + 6 = 0  or  s + 12 = 0 s = 6  or  s = 12
Hence s=-12 (small value)
s=-6 (large value)
