Solution: we have

(s + 9)^{2} - 9 = 0

we know that

(a + b)^{2} = a^{2} + b^{2} + 2 a b

\Rightarrow s^{2} + 9^{2} \times s \times 9 - 9 = 0 \Rightarrow s^{2} + 81 + 18 s - 9 = s^{2} + 18 s + 72 = 0 \Rightarrow s^{2} + 12 s + 6 s + 72 = 0 \Rightarrow s (s + 12) + 6 (s + 12) = 0 \Rightarrow (s + 6) (s + 12) = 0 \Rightarrow s + 6 = 0 or s + 12 = 0 \Rightarrow s = - 6 or s = - 12

Hence s=-12 (small value)
s=-6 (large value)
