Assuming that we are aware of every action involving Shanice's hats:
Let m stand for Shanice's hat collection on Monday.
She bought 5 hats on Tuesday
which would bring the number of hats she had to m+5
Half of her hats were destroyed on Wednesday,so on Thursday she would have m+52 hats.
We are told this number equals 17
So,
XXXm+52=17
XXXm+5=34
XXXm=29
