the equation of a line in slope-intercept form is.
x y = m x + b
where m is the slope and b the y-intercept
to calculate m use the gradient formula
x m = y 2 - y 1 x 2 - x 1
let ( x 1 , y 1 ) = ( 1 , 4 ) and ( x 2 , y 2 ) = ( - 2 , 6 )
m = 6 - 4 - 2 - 1 = 2 - 3 = - 2 3
y = - 2 3 x + b is the partial equation
to find b substitute either of the 2 given points into
the partial equation
using ( 1 , 4 ) then
4 = - 2 3 + b b = 12 3 + 2 3 = 14 3
y = - 2 3 x + 14 3 equation of line
