There are two distinct concepts at play here. x is a function denoting the nonnegative square root of x.
However, the general solution to a2=b2 is a=±b
So 25=5, but if x2=25 then x=±5. As Gae. S. has already mentioned, the easiest way to see that a2=b2a=±b is through factorisation:
a2=b2
a2b2=0
(a+b)(ab)=0
a=b or a=b
So, in your example, we have
x2=(2)2x=±2

In general
x2=|x|
So your equation is equivalent to
|x|=2
And from that last equation you find the two roots
x=2 and x=2
