f ( x ) = x 2 + 12 x 4
x 1 = 1
f ( x 1 ) = f ( 1 )
= ( 1 ) 2 + 12 1 4
= 1 + 12 - 4
=9
x 2 = 5
f ( x 2 ) = f ( 5 )
= ( 5 ) 2 + 12 5 4
= 25 + 60 - 4
= 81
the average rate of change of thefunction from x 1 to x 2
= f ( x 2 ) f ( x 1 ) / ( x 2 x 1 )
= {81 - 9}/ (5 - 1)
= {72}/ (4)
= 18
answer: 18

f(1)=1+12-4=9
f(5)=25+60-4
=25+56
=81
average rate of change of function = f ( 5 ) f ( 1 ) f ( 5 1 )
= 81 9 4 = 72 4 = 18 is the answer.
