For any function, the domain is all of the possible x values. For simple functions, such as x-2, all real numbers can be inserted into x, and a real number will result.
For x 1 x 3 , there are two limiting agents forx. First, you cannot take the square root of a negative number, so x-1 cannot be negative. Second, you cannot divideby 0, so x-3 cannot be 0.
This results in
x 1 0
x\ge 1
And
x 3 0
x 3
So our domain is
x 1 , x 3
