First, you must isolate the variables by one of the x to the other side(do not forget to change it to a negative if a positive or vice-versa). Then just isolate the variable by changing the numbers to one side and the variables on the other side. It should give you an equation like
5 x - x = 5 + 7
which equals
4 x = 12
then just divide both sides by 4.
4 x 4 = 12 4
So
x = 3
