The Earth calibrated compass points toward the south pole and since that is the orientation of the magnetic field that means the magnetic filed must go in the south pole. The Earth calibrated compass points away of the north pole and since that is the orientation of the magnetic field that means the magnetic filed must go out of the north pole.
