There is a magnetic field surrounding every magnet, which is depicted by magnetic lines of force. Inside the magnet, the magnetic lines of force go from the south pole to the north pole, beginning at the north pole and ending at the south pole.
Near the poles, where the magnetic force is greatest, the density of the magnetic field lines is higher. Like poles repel one another when two magnets are positioned with their like poles facing one another because the lines of force are in opposing directions.
A bar magnet's dissimilar poles are attracted to one another when they are facing each other because the magnetic lines of force are in the same direction.
